I rolled my eyes at him, my hand hovering above the ugly old rat protectively. I’d found him during the summer when I’d been spending some time at home. It always was so nice to see the face of my mother again, with her brown eyes that almost seemed to be golden in certain light, those freckles I’d memorized since I’d been a child and the ever apparent smile. After all those years, her hand still felt soft in mine and there was still the warmth in her smile and eyes when she saw me. When I was at home, I was but a child again, caught in the sweet embrace of childhood. Safety and consistency, those were the very things I needed when I wasn’t working at the ministry. That summer day I’d been tempted by the lovely weather to visit the meadows that were behind the old mansion. I’d walked outside in nothing but old trousers and a shirt which had once belonged to my father. I’d spend the day sunning and reading on the history of muggle witch burnings when I’d seen a soft ball of fur pass me by with another fuzzy ball between it’s jaws. I don’t know what exactly had led me to grab my wand and freeze the cat, perhaps the desire to save something innocent and pure. The rat had been old and withered, with teeth marks over it’s body.
